What is gum disease? Gum disease is an infection of the gum and the underlying supporting bone. If left untreated the bone that supports the teeth will erode, the teeth will loosen and fall out. What initially causes gum disease has not been conclusively identified. It is not caused by the aging process as there are many aged that have perfect gums. Periodontitis however occurs on people over 35 or at least becomes evident at this age.
